PRIVACY
What this site records.
This is a personal consulting site. I want to know whether what I write is useful and who it reaches, so I collect a small amount of information. I don’t sell it, share it with advertisers, or use it for anything except running my practice.
Page visits
Page views are counted with Umami, an analytics tool I host myself. It sets no cookies and doesn’t follow you across other sites. It records the page, the referring site, your browser and device type, and an approximate country and region worked out from your IP address. Your IP address itself is not stored by the analytics.
Organisations
The web server keeps standard access logs, including IP addresses. Once a day these are matched against a public directory of which network owns each address. That can show that someone from an organisation’s network visited, but not who. Visits from home internet providers are grouped together rather than named. Logs are kept for 30 days.
Links I send
When I send someone a link to this site, I sometimes add a short tag to it so I can see whether it was opened. If you arrived on such a link, the pages you viewed during that visit are associated with the tag.
Signing in
If you sign in, I keep your email address, the name and organisation you choose to give, and when and from what IP address you signed in. Sign-in uses a single essential cookie to keep you signed in for up to 30 days. Sign-in emails are delivered through a transactional email provider. If you choose “Continue with Google”, Google tells me your email address and the name on your Google account, and nothing else: I don’t get your password or access to your Google data.
Your choices
Browser settings that block scripts or tracking will stop the page counts. To see, correct or delete anything held about you, or to close an account, email jim@costigan.com and I will deal with it promptly.
